What was even more strange was I found myself fascinated by their contents! Back then I really wanted to pursue a doctoral degree, but didn’t think I’d ever be allowed to do so. Now that I’m here, I have to chuckle at that young woman who couldn’t imagine spending hours reading boring, professor-type books, much less enjoying doing so!

I spent much of the week getting to know more about the Delphi Method that I am now planning to use. I have learned about its strengths and limitations, but no matter how much I learn about it, the one phrase that keeps going through my head is “This sounds like FUN!” I can’t wait to get started on the recruitment process. However, first I need to get through the proposal approval process. One step at a time…

I am glad I took the time off, but I have missed this incredibly. I have continued my reading and research and have decided to change the direction of my dissertation. In Doc722 I was planning to do a case study of Sutter Health – the organization that I work for – and how they are using and not using social networking tools. Because of several experiences I have had over the past few months and some resources that I have found and others I’ve read, I’ve decided to do a case study of the US Healthcare Industry instead of concentrating on one organization. Now, the revisions to chapter one have started.

Dr. Holley (my dissertation mentor) has pointed out some issues that need to be addressed. Most notably, why would any leadership care about my study? I think that leaders should always care about how their customers (patients) and employees are communicating with each other and how they are communicating with management. Social networking presents problems for old-style corporations or organizations that have always maintained tight control over what is said within and by and about their organization. Such control is lost when social networking tools are used. However, on the potentially positive side, social networking can also open the lines of communication between patients and clinicians and between employees and management. Such openness has the potential of reducing confrontation and increasing collaboration between employees and management (Chesbrough, 2006; Levine, Locke, Searls, & Weinberger, 2001; Tapscott, & Williams, 2008). I am also planning to do some research on how social networking could affect the cost of healthcare and productivity for both patients and clinicians. I am eager to see if there is an affect.

I found a resource blog called Found in Cache that has a Hospital Social Network List including current data charts. California has one of the longer lists of hospitals using social media tools, however in looking at the list I have noticed that they are only listed as individual hospitals rather than as systems. I know this because I found several Sutter Health hospitals listed as individual facilities rather than members of a system.

Disclaimer: I am a full time employee of Sutter Health – the parent organization of Alta Bates Summit Medical Center. I work in the Human Resources Information Systems department on the Employee Intranet Team. My dissertation may include Sutter Health as one component of the study, but I will be using publically available information or information released to me through the inquiry process similar to those followed by other investigators.

Is any of the information I’ve provided so far important to my study? I don’t know yet. But it’s something to consider and keep in mind…

Alta Bates Summit Medical Center is actually a mini-system in-and-of-itself. It was created with the merger of Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley, CA and Summit Medical Center in Oakland, CA. They are practically next door neighbors in the grand scheme of California. Both were members of Sutter Health and were merged into one company as a way to streamline care and reduce operating costs. “Together, Alta Bates and Summit make up the East Bay’s largest private, not-for-profit medical center with three campuses, two acute care hospitals, birthing services, and a full array of the most advanced specialty services (Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, 2010).”

From both the Alta Bates Summit Medical Center (ABSMC) web site and the Hospital Social Network List, ABSMC is currently using Facebook and YouTube as their social networking tools. A cursory examination of these two accounts shows that each is an extension of the organization’s community outreach efforts – a “look what we’re up to” effort rather than a two way communication effort. There are listings for events and classes, but there is nothing scheduled as an online interactive event and YouTube does not offer any regular video or audio podcasts that patients can subscribe to on a daily or weekly basis. Also, there seems to be very little connectivity with the parent company’s Facebook or YouTube accounts.

One of the reasons that I chose to study how healthcare is using social media tools is because healthcare seems to be a late adopter of this new technology even though studies show that interconnectedness and communication make individuals and communities healthier (Zarbock, 2009). It will be interesting to watch and see how this organization’s use of these tools evolves over the coming months.

Does your healthcare provider use social networking tools? If yes, who are they and which tools do they use? Do you have a favorable impression of how they use social networking tools? If no, why not? I look forward to your comments and insights…

UPDATE on 11/17/2010: The above blog post was intended as a snapshot of what I see ABSMC doing right now in the social media arena. This was not intended as criticism. I know that Sutter Health, as an whole organization is adopting social networking and is learning how to use this new tool. This is one of many reasons that I enjoy working for this company.

I have spoken with Stacey Wells and received a comment from Amy Green (see below), both from Sutter Health East Bay Region Communications Department. I welcome their feedback and am looking forward to seeing what they will be doing in the future. I do want to offer an apology to them for not letting them know ahead of time that I was doing this before I hit the publish button. While I was following the company Social Networking Policy, I should have also considered the Media Policy and reached out to them for comment and feedback. I will incorporate this into future profiles of both Sutter Health affiliates and other organizations as well. Ms. Wells and Ms. Green were both very gracious in their responses and I appreciate their assistance in this learning process for me.

Today’s topic is healthcare news. If you’ve read past blog posts, you may remember that I work for Sutter Health – a large not-for-profit healthcare organization in Northern California, Southern Oregon, and Hawaii. I am researching how healthcare organizations are using social media for my dissertation. This is why I chose healthcare news for a topic to write about. In particular, I’m going to be looking for social media-related healthcare news.

The X-Prize Foundation – creators of the prizes for the first privately funded reusable spaceship (Ansari X Prize) and the first car to get 100 mpg (Progressive Automotive X Prize) - are now venturing into the healthcare arena specifically in neurotechnology. This new development was reported by MSNBC. The idea behind this series of prizes is to encourage investment in neurotechnologies that could have the affect of reversing paralysis, finding a way to overcome the body’s natrual defenses that keep out some neuro-medications, allow people to communicate with computers by thinking (rather than speaking) and other possibilities as well.

I won’t rehash the article here – though it is an extraordinary concept and could lead to astounding advances in neuromedicine! What I did want to examine is this: Is the X Prize a facet of Mass Collaboration? That is to say, are the folks running the X Prize Foundation looking for ideas and techniques from folks like you and me OR is this strictly for the neuroscientists and neurologists who study the human brain on a daily basis? Could an “ordinary person” with a perspective that the pros have not yet examined (or maybe haven’t examined closely enough) win this prize? Is there a way for someone using everyday technology or a common chemistry set to win this prize?

History is littered with technology breakthroughs that have come out of suburban garages (Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak invented the first Apple computer in Woz’s parent’s garage) or barns or bicycle shops(Orville and Wilbur Wright invented their airplane prototype in a bicycle shop). Is that what the X Prize Foundation is trying to do here? Are they trying to inspire the next Edison or Wozniak to conduct research from a non-traditional perspective and perhaps come up with something that the major pharmaceutical or medical device companies have missed? Are they encouraging some lowly radiology technician or phlebotomist to try to come up with a new technique that research professionals have overlooked or explore some area that medical grad students have missed? Regardless of the answer, I find the prospect exciting!

What do you think of this latest addition to the X Prize Foundation? Is there any other healthcare-related area where the foundation should offer another X Prize? Please share your thoughts in the comment area below…

The last couple of months have been “interesting.” There is an old Chinese curse that says “May you live in interesting times.” 2010 has definitely been that for me! In the last couple of months my post-concussion syndrome headaches have reasserted themselves. They haven’t been as bad as they were initially, but they’ve still been very hard to deal with. I’m on a different headache preventative Rx, but they still come and go. They just make dealing with everyday life difficult. So I decided to make a few changes in my life in order to try to relieve stress and, hopefully, prevent headaches.

I decided to take a break from school. I’m not quitting. I’m not even stopping working on my dissertation. I’m just taking a few months off from classes. I’m thinking that I will start back up again after the New Year. I’ve just been so tired with everything and everyone but school has made the sacrifices for me. Work has been wonderful. My family and friends have been supportive. Mark has been phenomenal! I just need to take some time to relax a bit.

I’ve decided to stop watching so much TV. I have already cut out the commercials by recording everything I watch on DVR first, but so much of TV is just pure drivel lately. Even the “educational” channels like Discovery, TLC, National Geographic, and Biography have turned to mush with sensational, shallow, and hollow TV shows. It’s really quite sad… Not even the SciFi (now Syfy) Channel has embraced the lowest form of SciFi for movies and gone away from its original mission and started showing “professional” wrestling and Ghost Hunters.

To replace all of my TV watching I’ve decided to read more. I suddenly find myself in various stages of several types of books, depending on my mood. I just finished The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood (more on that later…). I’m also reading Grimm’s Fairy Tales, Ethics: The Heart of Leadership, Socialnomics (as an Audible.com book), and Al Gore’s The Assault on Reason (another Audible.com book). All are interesting and the topics vary pretty widely.

I’ve also decided to take on a mini-project called Photo365. The idea is to take one photo each day for a year and post it on the web to share. Yes, this is another social media thing. I’m going to start on September 1st and go through August 31st, 2011. Once I start uploading photos, I’ll post them on http://365project.org/ and share them here, on Twitter, and on Facebook. It will be interesting to see what comes out of it.

I also plan to blog more often. I’m considering starting some series on life, photography, interesting questions to ponder, the aforementioned reviews of what I’m reading, and probably some op-ed pieces too.

I’ve taken a break from Toastmasters. I was in two clubs and was also being encouraged to participate in leadership roles. While I enjoy the Toastmasters program and have learned a LOT about public speaking, I find that a) I want to dive in and fully participate right before b) I collapse in an exhausted heap from even thinking about diving in and participating fully. I will return to it, but I just found myself having to say “No” and feeling lousy because I really wanted to say “Yes” to everything I was asked to help with.

Finally, I’m going to get into an exercise regimen. I joined Curves and really enjoy the program, but all of the headaches I’ve been having, coupled with all of the pressure I’ve been under lately, have made getting there to DO the exercise quite difficult. Starting Monday, I’m getting back on that horse and will go AT LEAST 3 days each week.

Have you ever had to do anything like what I’ve done here? How did you handle it? Any advise? Please comment. I’d love to hear from you.

I’ve been back from Year 3 Residency for a bit over a week now and I’m pretty nearly feeling human again. I got sick with a cold or allergies while I was in Phoenix and that is finally clearning up. I spent several days sleeping quite a bit and recharging before heading back to work.

My husband and I also celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary!!! We went to a Sacramento RiverCats Baseball game (which we both love to do!) and Mark had them put a message on the board for me (see the photo). RHMILY means “Remember How Much I Love You!” He got a great big “Awwww” and a kiss from me as I scrambled to pull out my camera. It was a wonderful day!

I started a new class last night. It’s called “Organizational Diagnosis and Intervention.” Do you have any idea what this is about? I’m not sure yet, but I’m sure it’s important. I just haven’t taken the time to read the syllibus or do the reading yet. That starts tonight! I’m sure this has to do with dealing with troubled organizations. I can think of a few organizations I’ve worked for where a class like this would have been helpful.

I think I’ve reached an alternatively weary/exciting part of my doctoral program. There are some days (hours/minutes/seconds) when I am tremendously excited about the fact that I only have four content classes and my dissertation project left to do and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. There are other days (hours/minutes/seconds) where I’m extremely tired and keep wondering “What was I thinking when I signed up for this journey?” I look at the “light at the end of the tunnel” and am sure it’s an oncoming train.

I am hoping that the excitement will go back to being the predominant feeling so I can push through to the end of this process and graduate. In the meantime I keep putting one foot in front of the other and doing one task or assignment at a time. My dissertation mentor, Dr. Holley, has assured me that my dissertation project is now doable and my timeline is reasonable. Now I just need to pitch it to the folks that I want to study…

Anyway, life proceeds apace. I’m back at work and am still training a new coworker who is coming along nicely. He starts teaching training classes tomorrow (under my watchful eye). Hopefully by July he’ll be able to take half of the training chores off of my plate and let me concentrate on other tasks.

My husband and dogs are great! I think Shasta wishes I’d walk her more often. Come to think of it, I wish I could walk her more often. Now that the weather is starting to improve I hope to fulfill her wish. I think I’ll start by taking both Roobee and Shasta to a nearby dog park.

Mark is as loving and supportive as ever! I really couldn’t do any of this without him. He keeps me going and helps to recharge my batteries on a daily basis.

This week for me has been one of clarity (at work an on my dissertation project) and of loss (either a friend of mine or family members of friends). Work and school have been moving along nicely. I’m feeling better about doing my dissertation project and starting to see the faintest glimmer of a light far off in the distance in this tunnel I am traversing. Work is developing all kinds of possibilities, but we’ll see what pans out.

I lost a family friend this week. He was 73 and it sounds like his body clock just wound down and stopped ticking. That’s not a bad way to go for someone who gave as much to his community and touched so many lives as “Mr. Hutch” did. His time ended and he…just…stopped. I went to his funeral and was not surprised to see how many people came to pay respects and support his family. He was a humble and influential man in his community and touched my life in ways I’ll never forget.

I also learned that the son of a friend of mine from Toastmasters died after a long and troubled history with drug addiction. His mother is a friend and really tried to help him overcome his addictions. She is mourning and I mourn her loss. I think her life will improve as she moves further from the loss, but the hole he leaves will remain.

I also learned about the death of a former coworker. I went to his funeral and I grieve for his family. Especially for a very young daughter who will have to grow up without her daddy.

It’s been hard this week to focus on my dissertation project with all of this going on. However, it does keep me moving forward and thinking positively. I had a professor explain the academic process to me once in the following way:

AA/AS = a time for students to figure out their homework:party time ratio

BA/BS = a time for students to figure out where the library is on campus

MA/MS = a time for students to learn to use the library and all of its resources

Ph.D. = a time for students to contribute to the library

I’m excited to be at the stage in my academic career where I will be contributing to the library soon!

It also bothers me when I hear people refer to professors and academia in general in derogatory terms or call life outside academia “the real world.” I don’t understand these attitudes, unless it’s that people don’t understand the efforts that go into academic pursuits.

Each level of academia (AA/AS, BA/BS, MA/MS, Ph.D/Practical Doctorate) exposes the students to different ideas, levels of thinking, and an array of different personalities. The higher the level of academia, the more reading that is required. Not just reading on one particular topic, but on a great number of subjects that help take your current thinking and turn it on its head. Then, once the reading is done, the students and professors come together to discuss the topics involved and that turns your thinking in a whole new direction.

I leave each class at the end of eight tumultuous weeks a better person than I entered the class. I have a whole new perspective of the class topic, the organization I work for, current events, and have a better idea of how I want to conduct my research for my dissertation project. The whole idea behind getting a higher degree is to help make the world a better place and solving problems that affect life, business, and society.

Writing a dissertation is a Sisyphean Task.

My parents, brother, sister, aunt and uncle, another uncle, and several friends are all entrepreneurs. None of them have any degrees higher than an associate’s degree. I have great respect for what they do and the knowledge they have accumulated through their experiences. However, each of them has expressed gratitude for my expertise and academic experience. That doesn’t make me better than they are. Nor does it make them better than me. We just have different experiences, knowledge, and expertise.

If you know someone that is working to pursue a higher academic degree, please be supportive of their efforts even if you don’t understand what they or doing or why. The higher the degree, the higher the level of commitment. The higher the degree, the deeper the level of thinking, understanding, and work is being put into solving a problem. It doesn’t matter what the problem is. Someone has taken it on because it matters to them. Don’t belittle their efforts or the hoops they have to jump through or the time it takes them to finish. Be supportive of someone pursuing a degree just like you would be of someone starting a new business. Both types of efforts are important. Just in different ways.

I saw a quote today that got me thinking… The quote was “A goal is a dream with a deadline.” I love quotes! Sometimes they are cheesy or corny or common, but the ones that stick with you are little bits of wisdom that can permeate the mind and change your perspective.

A little later in the day I read a blog post by one of my favorite Twitter buddies, @CouchSurfingOri, who listed out his goals (- NOT resolutions) for the year and what he was going to do to achieve those goals. Between the quote this morning and Ori’s blog post, I was inspired to set down my 2010 goals here in my blog and start working to achieve them. So, here goes… (by the way, these are in no particular order)

Toastmasters:

I plan to earn my Advanced Communicator Bronze (ACB). Earning the ACB entails giving a total of ten speeches from two Advanced Communicator Manuals (five from each manual). I have ordered and received two manuals already. The first is the Public Relations manual and the second is Communicating On Television. I chose the Public Relations manual because I am the Vice President of Public Relations for both of my clubs and because being able to get the message out about anything is of key importance to my plans for the future. I chose Communicating on Television because I would like to turn my podcast into a video podcast in 2011 (if not before) and don’t want to look like a fool when I do so.

I plan to earn my Advanced Leader Bronze (ALB). To earn this award I will need to conduct two programs from the Successful Club Series or the Leadership Excellence Series. I ordered two books from the Successful Club Series: Finding New Members for Your Club and The Toastmasters Educational Program. I decided on these two because both of my clubs are having membership issues. I thought these might be the best two for helping to recruit more members.

School

Complete my dissertation proposal. I have two classes scheduled with my dissertation mentor to do just this. I plan to submit my proposal in the Fall and start working on the project in January once the proposal has been approved. My mentor assures me that this is a reasonable timeline that will not cause me undue stress. I told my mentor that I wanted to get through the dissertation process with my health, my sanity, and my marriage intact. My husband says he agrees and approves of the priority listing.

Work

Teach 12 Video Webinars this year. I enjoy doing webinars for my coworkers on new or better ways to use Microsoft SharePoint 2007 to create and maintain our corporate intranet. To achieve this goal I will:

Schedule dedicated time to work on and prepare these webinars

Conduct a survey of my customers to find out what topics they most want to have covered

Advertise these webinars in advance of each one so that we get good attendance at each one.

Start an educational blog. I plan to post weekly articles that will answer questions and give tips and tricks to help our site administrators maintain their sites in an efficient and effective manner. To achieve this goal I will:

Schedule time to research & write articles each week

Survey my site administrators to find out what questions they have so that I can write articles that address these issues

Advertise each posting with our site administrators so that they are aware of this new resource

Life

Meeting health-related challenges. I have had some recent medical challenges that need to be met and overcome. This includes issues with my blood sugar levels dropping dangerously low due largely to a poor diet following gastric bypass surgery. To meet this goal I will:

Consult with an endocrinologist to try to regulate my insulin secretions

Consult with a nutritionist to start eating healthier food and developing better eating habits

Schedule time to exercise regularly

Spending quality time with my husband and dogs. I need to make sure that I am spending quality time on my relationships and the most important relationships I have right now are with my husband and dogs. They all rely on me for love and nurturing and I need to make sure they are taken care of. To achieve this goal I will:

Schedule a date night with my husband so we can have some quality time alone together doing fun, relaxing, or adventurous activities

Spend time playing with my dogs every day and when possible, take them with me when I exercise.

Turn StudentTech into a weekly audio podcast. Last year I did three episodes of this podcast but did not lay out a schedule of time or topics for further episodes. To achieve this goal I will:

Set up a list of topics to cover each week using Google Wave

Schedule time to write and record a podcast each week

Try to find people who want to be guests on podcasts in order to change things up a bit

That’s all that comes to mind right now. Do you have any suggestions for other goals I could add to the list? How about ideas for methods to achieve the goals I listed above? Please comment or connect with me on Twitter.
